Effect of Ca on Compressive Creep Behavior of AE41 Alloy

The effect of Ca on compressive creep behavior of AE41(Mg-4Al-RE) alloy was investigated at 150 ℃ and 100 MPa by a special apparatus.The microstructure of the alloy before and after compressive creep was analyzed by optical microscope,XRD and SEM with EDX.The results show that the primary compressive creep strains,the steady creep rates and the total creep deformations decrease and the creep-resistance of AEX(Mg-Al-RE-Ca) alloy increase with the addition of Ca.The microstructure of AE41 as-cast is composed of α-Mg matrix and Al11Nd3 phase.The poor creep resistance of AE41 is because the acicular Al11Nd3 phase is prone to decompose at high temperature.The acicular Al11Nd3 phase is gradually replaced by Al2Ca and Al2Nd after Ca addition into AE41.The creep resistance of AEX alloy is enhanced because the Al2Ca phase distributing at grain boundaries have high thermal stability.
