Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Mg-12Gd-2Y-1.5Sm-0.5Zr Alloy

The effects of alloying elements on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Mg-12Gd-2Y-1.5Sm-0.5Zr alloy were studied.The results show that the alloy has fine microstructure and a small quantity of Y,Sm and a mass of Gd solutioning in the Mg matrix.There are a little of MgGd3,Mg24Y5 and Mg41Sm5 precipitating in the alloy.The tensile strength of the alloy at room temperature,200 ℃ and 250 ℃ are 285 MPa,304 MPa and 330 MPa,respectively.The fracture mode is brittle fracture,which can explain the low elongation of the alloy.
