Study on Fabrication and Properties of ZrC-SiC Composite Coating Prepared by Vacuum Plasma Spray

ZrC-SiC composite coatings were prepared by vacuum plasma spray. Meanwhile, two different ways(one way is just ball milling of ZrC and SiC composite powders, the second way is that composite powders were sintered in vacuum furnace and crushed into required sizes after ball milling) were employed before spray. The microstructure and basic properties of the as-sprayed coatings were evaluated. The microstructure and morphology were studied by SEM, XRD and X-ray photoelectric spectroscopy(XPS). The results show that vacuum plasma spray is an effective method for synthesis of ZrC-SiC composite coatings and the coatings whose powders are fabricated via sintering crushing method exhibite comparatively denser microstructure with lower oxygen content, lower porosity, lower surface roughness, higher bonding strengthen and higher microhardness.
