An Abnormal Macrostructure of TC4-DT Titanium Alloy Forgings

The bright spot abnormal low-power microstructure appeared in a TC4-DT titanium alloy forging, and their tensile strength and yield strength at room temperature were reduced by 24-78 MPa compared with those of normal low-power microstructure. Metallographic analysis of the abnormal low-power microstructure show that the microstructures in the bright spot region are coarse and short, interlaced basket microstructure with each other, and there is no original β grain boundary. XRD and EBSD analysis shows that the abnormal microstructure has very strong texture on the(0002) crystal plane, and it is dominated by small angle grain boundaries, which leads to abnormal grain growth. The abnormal low microstructure can be avoided by forging above β-phase temperature.
