On the Development,Characteristics and Problems of Chinese Immersion Programs in US Primary Schools

This paper briefly reviews the development of Chinese immersion programs in American primary schools,and discusses the advantages,properties and characteristics of this kind of instruction.It is argued that this kind of instruction has the nature both of native and foreign language instruction,whereby the design of Chinese immersion instruc-tion should pay special attention to the particularities of the Chinese language and the particularities of teaching Chinese as a second language;the teaching methodology should be based on implicit instruction,while paying due attention to designing some explicit activities.
