Area Studies in China: Achievements,Deficiencies, and Prospects
Tang Shiping Zhang Jie Cao Xiaoyang
This article provides a survey of China’s area studies (and its broader international studies) from the perspective that institutional arrangements influence the pursuit of knowledge. It emphasizes that many problems associated with China’s area studies can be traced back to the institutional arrangements governing our scholarly community, rather than to cultural factors. The author therefore argues that to make area studies a respectable academic field in China we must promote institutional changes in four crucial respects.
