Trends of Research on Poplar Insect Pests and the Strategy for Control

Huang Jinfang Beijing Forestry University
Poplar longicorn and poplar and willow weevil are the most serioustrunk borers in the Continent. In the man-made poplar forests, about 90%of the damage is caused by these insects. In China, the most importantinsect pests are Glabrous spotted willow borer, Anoplophora glabripennis(Mtschulsky), Yellow spotted borer, A.nobilis Ganglbauer and brownmulberry borer, Aprioa germari (Hope). All the species are medium andlarge types in size, causing a vast amount of poplars to death. The acc-umlated economic losses are estimated at hundreds of millions of yuan. The stretches of planting with single species on large areas leads to theoutbreak and overrunning of these insects in China; whereas the mass orstrip mixed-planting of multi-species on small areas, practising short rot-ation operation and transforming single-functioned protective forests intomanaged-protective type of forests are the most effective measures to co-ntrol the poplar insect pests.
