Global Progress and Prospects on FACE (Free-Air CO_2 Enrichment) Experiment

Free-Air CO2 Enrichment(FACE),developed over the last ten years,provides means for researching and quantifying the responses of ecosystem and plant growth under elevated atmospheric CO2 concentrations.In this paper,FACE facility development and experimental technology are summarized;FACE features and advantages are synthetically analyzed;based on the above,FACE progresses on ecosystem,individual plant and microorganism are reviewed.It is suggested that future research should give attention to the mechanism of biosphere regulating carbon exchange,quantifying the responses of ecosystem and plant and modeling critical process of ecosystem under elevated CO2 concentrations.
