Experimental Study on Mechanical Properties of Geogrid-reinforced Granular Soil

Unconfined compression tests with three kinds of soilsand two kinds of reinforcement materials(triaxial geogrid and biaxial geogrid)have been performed to investigate the effects on compressive characteristics of the number of geogrid inclusions,the reinforcement spacing,or the particle gradation,the water contents or the compaction degree of granular soil.The following conclusions are presented:(1)The reinforced granular soil with a higher soil's compaction degree and more geogrid inclusions can bear a large deformation,and the seismic behavior improves as well.(2)For the reinforced granular soil with a higher soil's compaction degree,the strength will increase significantly by increasing the geogrid inclusions.(3)The geogrid-reinforced granular soil including more coarse grains has a higher strength.(4) Water content has nearly no influence upon the strength of a geogrid-reinforced granular soil.
