Significant advancement in research on coalformed gas in China.

Research on coalformed gas in China has past 20 years during which significant advancement has been made in two respects. On evaluation of resource and exploration: the evaluation of coalformed gas resource promoted the evaluation of gas resource; proved reserve of coalformed gas in China increased year by year, making the percentage of coalformed gas reserve in the total gas reserve of gas reservoirs, from 9% in the year of 1978 before the establishment of coalformed gas theory to 50.9% by the end of 1997; coalformed largemedium gas fields play an important role in the reserve increase of natural gas in China. By the end of 1997, 23 coalformed largemedium gas fields each with proved reserve of over 100108m3 were found, accounting for 59% of the number of largemedium gas fields and 63.1% of the reserve of all the largemedium gas fields in China, respectively. On the study of coalformed gas theory, important progress was made in 6 respects: methods for identifying coalformed gas were put forward; wet gas was found in coalformed gas; hydrocarbon derived from coalmeasure are generally gas instead of oil was determined; main factors controlling the form of largemedium coalformed gas fields were recognized; relationship between carbon isotope composition of coalformed hydrocarbon gas and vitrinite reflectance was established; and accumulation domain of coalformed gas was determined.
