WANG Pingyan;Key Lab of Forest Protection of State Forestry Administration,Research Institute of Forest Ecology ,Environment and Protection,Chinese Academy of Forestry;
Tomicus yunnanensis,T. minor and T. brevipilosus( Coleoptera: Curculionidae,Scolytinae)are important insect pests on Pinus yunnanensis. The visible last tergums( the eighth tergum in male and the seventh tergum in female) of the three species were carefully observed,measured and compared with stereoscopic microscope and scanning electron microscopy,respectively. The results showed that the seventh tergums of the females were big and semicircular,which sizes( length × width) were( 590 ± 17) μm ×( 827 ± 31) μm,( 619 ± 25) μm ×( 780 ± 16) μm and( 594 ± 29) μm ×( 815 ±21) μm,respectively while the eighth tergums the of males were small and rectangular,which sizes were( 365 ± 30) μm ×( 608 ± 24) μm,( 237 ± 41) μm ×( 580 ± 33) μm and( 296 ± 36) ×( 593 ±25) μm,respectively. There were significant differences in the length and width between females and males. Sex of live or died insects of the three species could be recognized in a fewseconds with the method,which could well protect specimens and not hurt live insects.
