Study on transferring diversion tunnels into vortex type of vertical shaft spillways

In combination with some hydro projects's practice, an integrated study was conducted to change diversion tunnels into vortex type vertical shaft spillways. It is the first time to use short pressure headrace tunnel and speed out flow combined with a vortex structure of volute well or volute chamber. The well (chamber) was optimally designed through hydraulic modeling. Its hydraulic characteristics and its design were systematically observed to provide the design of vortex vertical shaft spillways with a scientific basis.
