Hydraulic characteristics of the pressure conduit outlet and its optimal profile design

In this paper, the pressure distribution in the vicinity of the outlet of a pressure conduit is studied. For a conduit with rectangular cross-section of constant height, it is shown by theoretical analysis that when there is a free overfall from the outlet ( where aerator is provided ) or the outlet discharges over a structure having a parabolic surface boundary, large area of negative pressure may occur on the ceiling of the conduit. In order to avoid its occurrence and make the conduit free from cavitation erosion, it is necessary to find an optimal profile of conduit ceiling for the outlet part according to zero-pressure design criteria. The theoretical curve of a conduit ceiling with zero pressure distribution is given. The paper also presents a formula for calculating the pressure on the conduit ceiling under non-designed conditions. The theoretical results obtained are in good agreement with test data.
