A coupling model of infinite and finite elements for simulating arch dam foundations is presented and the boundary conditions of the foundation at infinity are satisfied. Some numerical results for 3D half space problem and an arch dam analysis show that the model improves the computational accuracy and saves nearly half of CPU time in comparison with the ordinary finite element simulation. In addition, the significant effects on stress distribution at the dam heel and dam toe demonstrate that the consideration of dam and foundation interaction is of importance to the analysis.A coupling model of infinite and finite elements for simulating arch dam foundations is presented and the boundary conditions of the foundation at infinity are satisfied.
