A simplified method for determining dynamic flexibility matrices of layered foundation

In this paper, a simplified method is presented for determining the dynamic flexibility matrices of viscoelastic layered foundation, which is approximated laterally by a limited range of vertical boundaries. The limited foundation is divided into columns. The modal functions of axial vibration and shearing vibration of columns are used as the base vectors for soultion space. The complex algebraic equations are obtained by using Lagranges equation. By solving these equations, the dynamic displacements of the foundation subjected to surface harmonic force can be obtained. Numerical results of this method are compared with those from semi-analytic method and they agree with each other. Therefore, this method is applicable to those complicated cases which can not be solved by analytic method.
