A study of hydraulic jumps in converging stilling basins for gravity arch dam spillways

The hydraulic-jump-type stilling basin is one of the principal energy dissipators used in spillway structures and outlet works. Horizontal rectangular stilling basin with constant width is conventionally used downstream of a gravity arch dam spillway, but large back flows result on both sides of the stilling basin due to the centripetal effect of the water over the arch dam spillway. As a result, random oscillating and squeezing of the hydraulic jump occur, and the energy dissipation by the hydraulic jump is insufficient. The converging stilling basin is a very effective dissi-pator in this type of problem. However, very few systematic studies have been done on hydraulic jumps in horizontal rectangular converging stilling basins for gravity arch dam spillways.Based on theoretical analysis and experiments, this paper systematically studies the characteristics of the hydraulic jump in the horizontal rectangular converging stilling basin. From the study, the formulas for conjugate depths and the length of the jump are obtained. In addition, a method to determine the contraction angle of the stilling basin is presented. Also the related statistic characteristics of the fluctuating pressure at the bottom of the basin are obtained.
