On the threshold of river channel shrinkage

Based on the principle of geomorphic threshold and analysis of field data, a conceptual model of river channel shrinkage is established. The evolution of the Lower Yellow River is considered as an example to demonstrate the mechanism of shrinkage and to explain the cause of serious disaster happened during minor flood. The dominant discharge for channel formation and relationship between dominant discharge and channel morphology under the condition of shrinkage are studied. Finally, some external thresholds of the channel shrinkage for Lower Yellow River are determined according to the mathematical model.
