Effects of a Polysaccharide from Porphyra yezoensis on Murine Immunocytes and Human Leukemia K562 Cells

Cell culture techniques were utilized to study the effects of the polysaccharide PY3 from Porphyra yezoensis on murine immunocytes and human tumor cell K562 in vitro. The proliferation of murine bone marrow cells, lymphocytes and the mixed lymphocyte reaction were detected when they were treated with PY3 of different concentrations. Its effects on human tumor cell K562 were explored in vitro as well. The results showed that PY3 could stimulate the proliferation of murine bone marrow cells and spleen cells, enhance the mixed lymphocyte reaction and inhibit the growth of K562 cells. The study suggests that the polysaccharide PY3 may not only improve the immunological function of mice, but also possess antitumor activity.
