Ultrasonic extraction and gas chromatographymass spectrometry(GCMS) have been used to analyze 18 preservatives in cosmetics such as benzyl alcohol, 3methyl4isopropylphenol, butylparaben, 2benzyl4chlorophenol, etc. A simple, rapid and accurate method for the determination of preservatives in cosmetics has been established. Ultrasonic extraction durations and solvents were selected. Linearity, recovery, precision were determined. The results showed that the method could effectively extract, separate and identify preservatives in cosmetics (lipsticks, shampoos, etc). The recoveries were determined to be from 9166% to 100.6% (n=7), the relative standard deviations from 046% to 623% (n=7), and the limits of detection were from 005 mg/L to 05mg/L.
