Determination of Preservatives in Cosmetics by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry

Ultrasonic extraction and gas chromatographymass spectrometry(GCMS) have been used to analyze 18 preservatives in cosmetics such as benzyl alcohol, 3methyl4isopropylphenol, butylparaben, 2benzyl4chlorophenol, etc. A simple, rapid and accurate method for the determination of preservatives in cosmetics has been established. Ultrasonic extraction durations and solvents were selected. Linearity, recovery, precision were determined. The results showed that the method could effectively extract, separate and identify preservatives in cosmetics (lipsticks, shampoos, etc). The recoveries were determined to be from 9166% to 100.6% (n=7), the relative standard deviations from 046% to 623% (n=7), and the limits of detection were from 005 mg/L to 05mg/L.
