The antibiotic activity of α chitosan with different molecular weights

The antibiotic activities of α chitosan with different molecular weights ( MW =1.56×10 4, 3.3×10 4, 9.5×10 4 and 7.2×10 5) against such strains of bacteria as Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis and Clostridium perfringens commonly present in aquatic products as well as miscellaneous microbes on fish epidermis were studied in this paper. The experimental results demonstrated that α chitosan showed its antibiotic activity in different degree and the antibiotic activity was enhanced with the decrease of average molecular weight of α chitosan. α Chitosan with  MW =1.56×10 4 inhibited the growth of experimental microbes more effectively than others with  MW =3.3×10 4,9.5×10 4 and 7.2×10 5.
