Effects of Restoration of Submerged Aquatic Vegetation on Purification Efficiency of Urban Pond to NPS Pollution

Submerged aquatic vegetation was restored inside an urban pond and its ecological function and structure were improved gradually. The purification efficiency of this urban pond before and after vegetation restoration was compared. Results showed that the urban pond had a stronger ability to remove total phosphorus (TP), total nitrogen (TN), nitrate nitrogen and ammonium nitrogen after vegetation restoration than that of before, but there was no significant difference in purification efficiency of CODcr; the density of Chl-a in water body descended to 15μg/L after vegetation restoration, which was 15.4% of that of before; the cell density of phytoplankton and Microsystems after vegetation restoration descended and the latter, the indicator of eutrophic water, was about two orders of magnitude less than that of before. Moreover, the pond had an increasing trend of purification efficiency with the development of submerged aquatic vegetation. It is an economic and valid way to manage urban NPS pollution and to keep the pollution out of transportation by restoration of submerged aquatic vegetation inside existing urban pond.
