Study of Producing Bio-diesel from Cooking Oils by Solid Acid Catalyst

A modified SO2-4-TiO2/ clay solid acid catalyst has been developed for production of bio-diesel in this paper. N-butylamine-TPD results showed that this catalyst has more acid sites and more strong acidity than ones of SO2-4/ clay, and is a middle strength acid catalyst. The esterification of acidic oils with methanol over SO2-4-TiO2/ clay can be carried out under the following conditions: mass ratio of methanol to feed oil was 0.43:1, catalyst amount 5 percent on basis of feed oil, reaction temperature 70℃, reaction time 8h. The catalyst SO2-4-TiO2/ clay can be recycled to use for producing bio-diesel. It can be used for 20 times and 2 times for industrial fatty oil and cooking oil, respectively. The modified SO2-4-TiO2/ clay solid acid catalyst exhibited good activity and excellent stability,and enjoyed predictable industrial application prospect.
