QUANTITATIVE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN THE LITTERDECOMPOSITION OF FOUR SPECIES IN INNERMONGOLIA GRASSLANI, AND CLIMATIC FACTORS

he relationship between the climatic factors and the litter decomposition of 4 species(Aneurolepidium chinense , Stipa grandis , Salsola collina , Achnatherum splendens )in InnerMongolia steppe were studied by modelling. The mathematical model is X(t)/X(o)=exp[-(at+b∑T+c∑P )] ,Where t is time ,X (t)is the weight of the remaining litter at time t,T isair temperature ,and P is precipitation. A high temperature and aboundant precipitation willresult in rapid decomposition. The relativc rate of decomposition varied obviorsly in differentseasons and the rate in July was found to be 2. 6-6 times that in April or in October. Theannual changes were small and the annual relative decomposition rate in a slowly year wasnot less than 96 % of that in a fastly year. The changes in annual absolute decomposition ratewere distinct and it becomes slower as the number of year increasing. A decomposition of90% litter will take5. 8 years for A. chinense . 6. 4 years for S. grandis,6. 8 years for S. collinaand 13. 4 years for A. splendens on an estimated basis.
