Evaluation of the biological safety of permanent magnets embedded with a silicon membrane using intermuscular implantation test

Wang Jianhuo1, LiMeijun1, Lei Jun 1 etal.1 The 1st Surgical Department of the 476th Clinical Division of Fuzhou General Hospital of Nanjing Military Area Command, Department of pathology,Fuzhou 350002; 2 Department of Orthopaed- ics,Changzheng Hospital, Shanghai 200003, P.R. China.
Objective To investigate the biological safety of silicon membrane embedded permanent magnets of a micturition alert device on the principle of compass. Methods The experimental group used a silicon membrane embedded NdFeB magnet which was 10 mm in diameter and 3 mm in thickness with a magnetic induction intensity of 0.3 Tesla at the center of the pole face surface. The control group used a silicon membrane embedded NdFeB alloy with the same dimensions. The grafts were implanted into the spatium intermusculare of the lateral vertebral muscle in 8 rabbits. All the rabbits were scheduled to be fed up to one year. Both the reaction of rabbits and local pathology around the grafts were observed after implantation. Results Wound healing was normal after muscular implantation of grafts in 8 rabbits, one of which died from emaciation 19 days after operation and others lived with excellent tolerance. The grades were 1 for the inflammatory reaction and fibrous capsule of the local tissue around the grafts in both experimental and control group. Conclusion NdFeB permanent magnets embedded with silicon membrane were biologically safe to meet the criteria for clinical application.
