A Comparative Study on the Difference in the Choice of Dwellin g Places Between the Hemudu People and the Banpo People

ZHANG Wei-shen (Northwest Research Institution of Historical Environment and Econo mic and Social Development, Shaanxi Normal University, Xi'an, Shaanxi, 710062, China)
The Hemudu culture is a typical sample of its kind in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River while the Banpo culture is a typical represe ntative of the Yangshao Culture in the reaches of the Yellow River, both flouris hing in the middle phase of neolithic times. Although the neolithic Hemudu peopl e had already invented the shallow wooden structured well, they did not popular ize its use. So they coincided with the Banpo people in the choice of dwelling pl aces——in the proximity of rivers(or lakes or moors). Their patterns of choice are believed to be of the following four advantages: 1) a convenient access to d rinking water both for the dwellers themselves and their animals; 2) an easier w ay of developing the primitive farming; 3) a better condition for the developmen t of fishing and hunting economy; and 4) a convenient means of communications fo r the primitive ancient people.
