Expression of p27 in squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus

Objective P27 is associatfed with cell proliferation.Tumor cell cycle analysis has indicated that tumors with a higher proliferation rate showed more aggresisve clinical behavior.Therefore,it is important to understand cell proliferation of this disease in clinical practice.The objective of this study was to observe the character of expression of P27 in esophageal carcinoma and to clarify the relation between clinicopathologic and this factor.Methods Immunohistochemistry for P27 was carried out.P27 expression was examined and detailed pathologic examinations were conducted on tumors from the patients (56 males and 33 females with surgically resected esophageal squamous cell carcioma).Results P27 immunostaining were all comfined to the nuclei in both neoplastic and non-neoplastic cells.The P27 positive immunostaining in the nuclei was significantly higher in well differentiated sequamous cell carcinoma (SCC43.7%,14/32) than in the other tumer types (35.5%,11/31;23.1%,6/26,P0.05).Conclusion The expression levels of P27 may imply the proliferative activity of caner cells in patient with SCC of esophagus.The loss of P27 expression correlates with poor SCC differentiation in patients with esophageal carcinoma.
