Simulation of Reactive Distillation Process for Esterification of Terephthalic Acid with Ethylene Glycol Using Aspen Plus

To explore a new technology for synthesis of bis(2-hydroxyethyl) terephthalate from terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol, feasibility of reactive distillation process for the direct esterification was analyzed with the aid of residue curve map using Aspen Plus simulation package. Simulation was performed for both conventional process which was carried out in a tanks - in - series agitated reactor and new reactive distillation process with the assumption of simultaneous reaction and physical equilibrium. Effects of several key operation factors such as feed stage location, reflux ratio, distillate molar flow rate on reaction conversion and selectivity were investigated. Simulation results showed that reaction conversion and selectivity increased significantly with increasing distillate flow rate or distillate to feed ratio. Reactive distillation technology offers obvious potential advantages of increase in conversion and selectivity, simplified flowsheet and reduced capital cost over conventional process.
