Preparation of SBA-15 Mesoporous Molecular Sieve Modified by Cerium for Catalytic Synthesis of Methyl Palmitate

Cerium-modified mesoporous SBA-15 molecular sieve(Ce(SO4)2/SBA-15) was prepared by impregnation and was used as catalyst for synthesis of methyl palmitate(bio-diesel oil). The catalyst was characterized by means of XRD, nitrogen adsorption, IR and TG-DTA. The results show that cerium is bonded onto SBA-15 molecular sieve. Structure of the prepared Ce(SO4)2/SBA-15 catalyst keeps unchanged as before modification with highly ordered two-dimensional hexagonal mesopore. Acid strength on catalyst surface is in range of 0.99-1.80, determined by means of Hammett indication method. The esterification of palmitic acid and methanol was carried out over the catalyst to synthesize methyl palmitate. Optimal esterification conditions were obtained by orthogonal experiment. Under optimal conditions: mole ratio of palmitic acid to methanol 1 ∶15, mass fraction of the catalyst in palmitic acid 5.0%, reaction time 8 h, yield of methyl palmitate can reach 92%. The catalyst can be regenerated for reuse.
