Implantation of a vascularized fibular graft for femoral neck fracture in young adult

Objective To investigate the healing of femoral neck fracture in young adults surgically treated with transplantation of a vascularized fibula graft combined with a fixation with compression screws and to observe restoration of motion of the hip joint. Methods A vascularized fibula autograft was transplanted to the femoral neck and head plus an internal fixation with compression screws. Fibular artery and vein were anastomosed with lateral femoral circumflex artery and vein. Result Sixteen patients were followed more than 2 years and the satisfactory rate for the surgery was 87.5%. Conclusions Transplantation of a vascularized fibula graft plus a fixation with compression screws plays a synergetic role in the treatment of femoral neck fracture. It provides blood supply and stabilization to the sites of fracture and is valuable in healing of the fracture and in prevention of avascular necrosis of the femoral head.
