Objective To explore expression of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and its relationship with biological characteristics and prognosis of gastric cancer. Methods The streptavidin-peroxidase immunohistochemistry was used to detect cyclooxygenase-2 expression in 102 cases of gastric cancerous tissues. All cases were followed up after operation, the discrepancy of cyclooxygenase-2 expression was compared with biological characteristics and prognosis of gastric cancer. Results The cyclooxygenase-2 expression rates in gastric carcinoma tissue was 67.65%. The level of cyclooxygenase-2 expression had significant correlations with site, lymph node metastasis, depth invaded and TNM stage of gastric carcinoma (P 0.05). There was no correlation between cyclooxygenase-2 expression and histological differentiation of gastric carcinoma (P 0.05). The survival analysis showed that the three-year survival rate in the cyclooxygenase-2 positive cases were lower than that in the cyclooxygenase-2 negative cases. Conclusion The level of Cox-2 expression is significantly related to the biological characteristics of gastric carcinoma and it plays an important role in prognosis of gastric carcinoma.
