Free Radical Scavenging Activity of the Extracts from Alisma orientalis

Objective To investigate free radical scavenging activity in vitro of different polarity fractions of extracts from Alisma orientalis.Methods Six different fractions were obtained from the extract of A.orientalis by using different polarities of solvents,such as petroleum ether,ethyl acetate,n-butanol,ethanol,water,and macroporous resin.According to scavenging activities for hydroxyl radical(·OH),superoxidized radical(O2-·),1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl(DPPH·) radical and H2O2,free radical scavenging activities of different polarity fractions were compared.Results n-butanol fraction of A.Orientalis had better scavenging ability than others for O2-· and H2O2,ethyl acetate fraction of A.Orientalis had better scavenging ability than others for DPPH·,water fraction of A.Orientalis had better scavenging ability than others for ·OH,including Vitamin C.Conclusion The fractions of ethylacetate,n-butanol and water have strong free radical scavenging activities.
