Vertical characteristics and environmental significance of sediments in Jiulongkou Wetland in Lixiahe River system

Based on measurement of the concentrations of carbon and nitrogen and their particle sizes in the core sediments from the Jiulongkou Wetland,the accumulation status and the depth-dependent change characteristics of carbon and nitrogen were studied,and the relationships between TN,ON,NH+4-N,TOC,and the median particle were analyzed. The results show that the median particle of sediments ranged from 13. 44 μm to 82. 01 μm,and the vertical change of the median diameter can be roughly divided into three sections. The total nitrogen was mainly composed of organic nitrogen,and the ammonia nitrogen mainly consisted of inorganic nitrogen. The vertical distribution characteristics of nitrogen were consistent with human activities in the study area since the early 1950s.With the increase of the depth of sediments,the TOC concentration first increased,and then decreased rapidly.The ratio of carbon and nitrogen w( C) / w( N) ranged between 5. 67 and 26. 08,which indicated that the terrigenous vegetation with fiber bundles was the primary possible source of the organic matter in the sediments. In addition,in the sediments,TOC was significantly correlated with TN,w( C) / w( N) was sensitive to the TOC concentration,and the southern region of the lake was affected by human activities to a greater degree than the other two monitoring sites.
