Effects of B_2O_3 and Si on the Properties of Boron Carbide

Boron carbide(B_4C) ceramic composites were fabricated by hot-pressing at 2000 ℃ for 1h with B_2O_3 and Si through reactive sintering. The effect of B_2O_3 and Si content on the density and mechanical properties of the composites was studied. The results show that the density and mechanical properties of B4 C ceramics prepared by adding B_2O_3 and Si were significantly improved. When 5wt.% B_2O_3 and 5wt.% Si are added, the relative density, hardness, fracture toughness and flexural strength of B_4 C ceramics is 99.3%, 30.9 GPa, 4.59 MPa · m1/2 and 442 MPa, respectively. When 1wt.% B_2O_3 and 1wt.% Si are added, the fracture toughness of B_4 C ceramics can reach 4.97 MPa · m1/2.
