A Corpus-based Study on the Use of First Person Pronouns in Research Articles by Native Speakers of English and Chinese Scholars

Gao Xia;
Academic writing has traditionally been thought of as a convention-bound monolithic entity that involves distant and impersonal prose. However,recent research has suggested a growing recognition that there is room for negotiation of identity within academic writing. This paper explores the notion of identity in native and non-native( Chinese) academic writing by examining the use of first person pronouns in a multidisciplinary corpus comprising of journal research articles( RAs) from the fields of Linguistics and Physics. The quantitative analysis shows physicists'( both native and Chinese) clear preferences for first person pronouns,with significantly higher frequency of usage than those in linguistic RAs. Disciplinary distinctions seem to outshine the national cultural impact. A clear difference of pronoun usage in RA different sections has also been indicated.
