Evaluative-it Chunks in Science Texts: Principles and Methods of Corpus-driven Phraseological Equivalence Study
Zhang Le;Lu Jun;
In light of Sinclair's Idiom Principle and the corpus-driven approach to identify equivalent units,the present paper discusses attitude-laden clausal chunks with it as formal subject,and tries to identify their Chinese equivalents by using the parallel and comparable corpora. It is found that: 1) science texts contain a considerable number of recurrent evaluative itchunks which express attitudinal and evaluative meaning; 2) the rise of parallel and comparable corpora paves a new path for the study of cross-linguistic phraseological equivalence; 3) lexical co-occurrence plays a key role in the establishment of crosslinguistic phraseological equivalence.
