A CiteSpace analysis of the application of think-aloud protocols as a tool in international ESL researches(1992—2016)

By using the bibliometric tool of Cite Space,this paper analyzes the ESL research which uses think-aloud protocols( TAPs) as a research tool from 1992 to 2016. The data were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection. By analyzing the visualization information of publication time distribution and research focuses with key-word frequency,this study finds that,the SLA research with TAPs has the following characteristics: 1) The number of relevant papers published in top international journals on linguistics and foreign language teaching has an increasing trend,indicating that the TAPs have become a mature research method in the field of second language research; 2) There is a wide variety of dynamic changes of research,including comprehension,strategy,awareness,attention,reactivity,etc. The main hotspots are as follows: strategy research in ESL language processing,the role of awareness and attention in ESL development and the effectiveness of TAPs as a research method. The implications for domestic SLA research are discussed.
