Stress Analysis of Asphalt Overlay on Existing Concrete Pavements

The stresses within asphalt overlays on existing jointed(or cracked) concrete pavements due to traffic loading and thermal contraction have been analysed by using a two-dimensional finite element model with the consideration of the bonding conditions between overlays and existing pavements. The mechanism of reflection cracking and the effect of layer thickness and interlayer has also been discussed. It is found that the bonding condition between overlay and existing pavement has considerable impact on loading or thermal stress paterns within overlay.
