A Study on Seismic Design Spectrum for Shanghai Area

In this paper accelerograms recorded at alluvium (corresponding to site category IV in Chinese code) in western part of the United States are selected and divided into three groups according to their epicentral distance to calculate their acceleration response spectra. The minimum coefficient of variation for statistical study is achieved by using peak ground acceleration, velocity and displacement to calibrate the spectra within high, medium and low frequency range respectively. In order to consider the influence of the deep alluvium in Shanghai on the nature of the spectra, a response analysis with a model of the linear elastic one-dimensional soil layers under some excitations which are accelerograms at rock recorded in the western part of the United States has been conducted. At last, based on average spectra of these results a spectrum for the seismic design of structures in Shanghai area is presented.
