On the Strategic Pass-Supporting Battalion System of Ji Fortification in Ming Dynasty——With Reference to the Relationship between Wei-Suo Garrison System and Battalion System

XIAO Lijun;
Ji fortification of Ming Dynasty had many battalions,and typically,they were interworking with the local Passes.No clear records could tell the founding time of those pass-supporting battalions.however,on the grounds of the cases in Ming materials,the two theories about the founding time of these battalions both had deficiencies:Hongwu theory is short of evidence;Xuande theory didn't give the initial founding time.According to current materials,combining with the Ming frontier guarding policies,it could be concluded that the first battalions in Ji fortification,whose soldiers were trained for the pass guarding first appeared in Yongle period.The soldiers of the battalions who were mainly from garrisons become the most basic defense unit and were trained as the reinforcements for the pass guardian.The military troops with defensive assignments in Ming Ji fortification implemented the ShengZhen battalion system(such as the Ji fortification pass-supporting battalions)in late Ming,then turned to Green Banner Military System in Qing dynasty.The troops and military families who were in charge of reclaiming field were infused into the Zhou-Fu-Xian Administrative System in Qing.
