Miss Minnie Cooper's Madness in William Faulkner's Dry Sepember

JIN Wen-ning
Miss Minnie Cooper in Faulkner's story Dry September is a loud flame and wins her popularity in the town's social life when she was young, but she is ruthlessly deserted at the age of marriage. The isolation in the town because of her failure to live up to the standard of behavior for a lady causes extreme frustration in her mentality. In the meantime, racism is predominant in the cultural context she lived in to lead to spiritual dryness and mental disease. The white racism is destructive to the white people's mind as well as oppressive to the black. It is the conflict between the society and the individual under such special circumstances that brings Miss Minnie Cooper to the final mental collapse, rendering her a victim of Southern womanhood.
