Effects of cilostazol on platelet parameters in the microvascular complicationsof diabetic patients

Object: To evaluate the effects of cilostazol on the prevention and therapy of diabetic patients with microvascular complications. Methods: Mean platelet volume (MPV), platelet crit (PCT), platelet distribution width (PDW) and platelet count (PLT) were determined in 120 diabetic patients and 87 healthy adults. A total of 60 diabetic patients with microvascular complications were orally given cilostazol for 1 month. The changes in MPV, PCT, PDW and PLT before and after administration were observed. Results: MPV, PCT and PDW in diabetic patients were significantly higher than that of controls (P0.01). MPV, PCT and PDW in diabetic patients with microvascular complications were significantly higher than that of diabetic patients without microvascular complications (P0.01). With daily administration of 100 mg cilostazol, MPV and PDW decreased significantly after 1 month (P0.01). Conclusion: Cilostazol could improve platelet parameters and prevent progression of microvascular diseases. It was particularly effective in diabetic patients with microvascular complications.
