Overlapping Distribution of Subcutaneous Primary Afferents in Nearby Acupoints of Stomach Meridian

Deng Yunping, Mei Bin, Ru Liqiang et alDepartment of Neurobiology, School of Basic Medical Sciences, Tongji MedicalUniversity, Wuhan 430030
Using CB - HRP and fluorescein tracing method, we investigated the distribution of subcutaneous primary afferents in "Futu"(ST32), "Zusanli"(ST36) and "Xiajuxu"(ST39) acupoints which belong to the same traditional Chinese meridian——the "Zuyang-ming" Stomach Meridian. The results were as follows; ① Subcutaneous primary sensory afferents in an acupoint could project to several dorsal root ganglia (DRG). Cells labelled in DRG were mainly of small and middle size and they were in normal distribution in number. In "Futu" and "Zusanli" acupoints the subcutaneous afferent nerves projected to T11-L6DRG with a predominant number of labelled neurons in L2,L3 and L3 respectively, while in"Xiajuxu" acupoint the afferent nerves were only related to L2~L5 DRG in which most ofthe labelled neurons were in L3 and L4. ② One DRG could innervate subcutaneous tissues of several acupoints. L3 DRG was the main ganglion which innervated intensely all of the three acupoints studied. ③ Using retrograde fluorescein double-labelling method, we found that a few of DRG neurons at segments L3 and L4 could collaterally innervate subcutaneous tissues of the area of "Zusanli" and "Xiajuxu" acupoints. The overlapping distribution of subcutaneous primary afferents in acupoints of the same meridian with short distance between them may be related to the propagated sensation along the meridian.
