The Effects of Smartphone Recording on the Voice Acoustics

Objective The purpose of the present study was to explore the effect of different recording methods of smartphone(self-recording of the subjects and the assisted recording of the speech therapist) on the acoustic characteristics, and to analyse whether the different software can provide similar results in the self-recording method, further to seek a convenient and economical means of voice disorders assessment. Methods 30 college students aged 21 to 27 in a university in Shanghai were recruited. A smartphone was used as the recording equipment, F_0, Jitter, Shimmer and HNR extracted by Praat and Dr. Speech were analyzed in two recording methods, and the differences and correlation were compared in selfrecording. Results There were no statistically significant differences for F_0, Jitter, Shimmer and HNR(P0.05). The results showed extremely moderate to high correlations between Praat and Dr. Speech in self-recording(P0.01). Conclusions Different recording methods had no significant influence on the acoustic characteristics, and Praat and Dr. Speech can provide similar acoustic analysis results in self-recording. Results provided an important inspiration for making full use of the rich functions of domestic smartphones to develop voice disorder assessment software.
