Comparison of Two Kinds of Alaryngeal Speech

Objective To compare the differences in maximum phonation time(MPT),speech intelligibility,reading time between esophageal speakers and tracheaoesophageal shunt speakers without prosthesis(TE speakers).Methods Two groups included 21 esophageal speakers and 30 TE speakers,which were matched in age,sex and years after total laryngectomy.According to our method , the data of two groups on MPT,speech intelligibility and reading time were collected.T test analyzed MPT and reading time;H test analyzed speech intelligibility.Results Esophageal speech was inferior to TE speech in three aspects.MPT of esophageal group was apparently shorter than that in TE group;Reading time of esophageal group was obviously longer than that of TE group.Speech intelligibility of esophageal speakers was slightly worse than that of TE speakers.Conclusion TE speech is superior to esophageal speech.The surgical approach of TE shunt speech without prosthesis is simple and TE speakers are easily to be trained,so we should use the approach in all laryngological surgery.
