LONGITUDINAL SEISMIC RESPONSE AND POUNDING EFFECTS OF GIRDER BRIDGES WITH UNCONVENTIONAL CONFIGURATIONS

In this paper,the nonlinear seismic response of a model for girder bridges with unconventional configurations in western mountainous areas is evaluated.The characteristics of out-of-phase vibrations and pounding effects of adjacent girders at the movement joints are investigated.The results indicate that strong longitudinal earthquakes can lead to large relative displacements and pounding of adjacent girders at the movement joints due to the differences in the periods of adjacent girders.The pounding amplifies the responses of dwarf piers.Further more,a method for reducing the out-of-phase vibrations and pounding effects of adjacent girders at the movement joints are introduced.
