Model tests of H-V reinforced sand-bed subjected to strip loading

The conventional reinforcements of soils are often laid horizontally. A new concept of soil reinforced with horizontal-vertical(H-V)geosynthetics was proposed. In the proposed H-V reinforced soil, vertical reinforcing elements are placed upon the horizontal ones. The remarkable characteristic is that the vertical elements can not only restrict the lateral deformation of the soil, but also provide passive resistance on the lateral sides of the vertical elements and form’strengthened zones’, So, it can improve the stress state of the reinforced soil and increase the strength and stability greatly. In this paper, a series of model tests were conducted on foundations reinforced with H-V inclusions and horizontal elements respectively, subjected to strip loading. The bearing capacity and the settlement were compared. From the test results,it was shown that the H-V reinforcement can significantly increase the bearing capacity and reduce the settlement, as compared with the horizontal reinforcements. And the reinforcement effects were better with the increases in the height of vertical reinforcing elements and the length of horizontal reinforcements. Based on the model experiments, the interaction mechanism between soil and H-V inclusions was analyzed.
