Mesona Chinensis Benth is traditional chinese herbal medicine. The crude polysaccharide can be obtained from Mesona Chinensis Benth by extraction with 0.5% NaHCO_3 and by fraction precipitation with alcohol. It was deeoloured with H_2O_2 and further purification by chromatography on a Sephadex G-75 column. The pure polysaecharide is given the name of Me sona Chinensis Benth polysaccharide (MCPS) which is homogeneous by the analysises of thin-layer chormatogrpahy, agarose gel electrophoresis and cellulose acetate film electrophoresis The analysis of MCPS by IR spectrum scanning gave a special absorption band of polysaccharide. Its molecular weight was estimated to be 43,000 by HPLC and its monosaceharide composition was identified by thin-layer chromatography. The results indecated that MCPS consists of D-glucose, D-galaetose, L-arabinose, xylose, rhamnose galaeturonie acid and an unknown sugar. Preliminary results of pharmacology experiment showed that MCPS have function of increasing immunity and antieaneer effect.
