Developing trend of biomass energy sources in the world

Che Changbo1,Yuan Jihua1(Research Center on Petroleum Resources Strategy,Ministry of Land and Resources,Beijing 100034,China)
Since the 90s of the 20th century, the first generation of biomass energy sources, represented by fuel ethanol and biodiesel, has been well developed. In this paper, through an analysis of the current situation and the facing problem in the biomass energy development all over the world, its future developing trend is predicted.Currently, the U.S.A is the largest ethanol producer,Brazil is the second-largest fuel ethanol producer,EU becomes the main biodiesel producer, and the other countries are also actively developing biomass energy sources. But on the other hand, such biomass energy development has also brought about a series of problems, such as an overly corn-emphasized grain planting structure,a decrease in total food supply,an increase of food(cooking oil) price, and even the social instability caused by the food crisis. However, biomass energy sources are still the important field for human beings to achieve sustainable energy development so the second and the third generations of non-grain biomass energy sources have become the world focus and will be the ultimate goal of biomass energy development.Agricultural and forest residues like straw of wheat, hay, and wood chips, etc.are taken as the main raw materials by the second generation of biomass energy sources, the dealing of which needs a significantly high cost and makes the commercial production almost inaccessible;while oils seem more difficult to be Abstracted from micro algae as the raw material by the third generation of biomass energy sources, and the related research is still at the laboratory stage. In conclusion, the first generation of grain-based biomass energy sources will not be easily replaced by the second or the third generation of non-grain ones within a short term but the latter two generations will be possibly a rational choice for human beings in the future.
