Palaeoflood Hydrological Study in the Yun County Reach in the Upper Reaches of the Hanjiang River

Through investigation in the upper reaches of Hanjiang river,Holocene Palaeoflood slackwater deposit profiles were identified in Yun county reach of Hubei province.The grain-size distribution,the magnetic susceptibility and loss-on-ignition were analyzed in the laboratory and compared with modern flood SWD.The results showed that four palaeoflood SWDs were typical and recorded four palaeoflood events in the upper reaches of Hanjiang river.By using stratigraphic correlation and OSL dating,the four palaeoflood events were dated to 12600-12400 a B.P.,11600-11400 a B.P.,5500-5000 a B.P.and 1000-900 a B.P..According to the palaeoflood peak stages and hydraulic parameters,the peak discharges of four palaeofloods were reconstructed to 46 280~63 720 m3/s by using the slope-area method,and these results were accorded with relationship between the peak discharge and drainage area from respective palaeoflood studies of global rivers.Meanwhile,the flood peak discharge of 2010 extraordinary flood was reconstructed with the same method and hydraulic parameters in the same cross-section.The error between the reconstructed discharge of flood in 2010 and gauged discharge was 1.74%.This showed that the reconstructed palaeoflood peak discharges were reliable.
