Investigation and Assessment of Soil Pollution by Heavy Metals in Water-level-fluctuating Zones of the Zhuxi River Valleys

The soil samples were collected and monitored in water- level- fluctuation zones of the Zhuxi branch of Yangtse River.The pollution status of soil heavy metals, which conclude Pb, Cr, Cu and Zn, were evaluated by the single factor index method and N. L. Nemerow synthesized index number method and the standards was according to the Standard of the Soil Environment Quality (GB15618- 1995 II). The results indicated that the contents of Zn and Pb increased from upper reaches to lower reaches of Zhuxi River, and the average concentration of Zn was higher than soil background value. The single pollution indexes of Cu, Cr and Pb were all less than 1.0, but that of Zn was over 1.0 in urban sections of Zhuxi River. No pollution of Pb, Cr and Cu was found in the soils investigated according to the monomial pollution index. As estimated by N. L. Nenerew aggregate pollution index, the P value was over 1.0, which suggested that the soils in urban sections of Zhuxi River were slightly polluted. The environment reached the "clean" level and the "safe" class in the other areas of Zhuxi River.
